{"id":2472,"date":"2020-06-02T21:12:27","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T01:12:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lincolndems.org\/?p=2472"},"modified":"2020-06-02T21:12:46","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T01:12:46","slug":"lcdp-chair-statement-on-commissioner-mitchems-violation-of-the-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lincolndems.org\/es\/lcdp-chair-statement-on-commissioner-mitchems-violation-of-the-law\/","title":{"rendered":"LCDP Chair Statement on Commissioner Mitchem&#8217;s Violation of the Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not long ago if you had asked me about commenting publicly on an elected leader\u2019s flagrant violation of a law or legal directive, I probably would have laughed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Today Ken Lemon from WSOC contacted me to comment on Lincoln County Commission Chair Carroll Mitchem\u2019s deliberate and public decision to violate the law, and I am not laughing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is an embarrassing situation \u2013 not for Mr. Mitchem, but for Lincoln County.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Only two sentences from my interview were aired in the middle of what was a fairly lengthy description of a local celebration of arrogance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s consider just a few points:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Didn\u2019t Mr. Mitchem take an oath as a commissioner to uphold the constitutions of this country and our state?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If he can choose one law to violate, which law will be his next choice?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Are the other citizens of this county allowed to choose one law to break?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If not, why not?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b>What kind of social order will we have if all of us get to copy Mr. Mitchem\u2019s behavior \u2013 even just one time?<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Aside from the clearly legal side of this argument, where are the ethics that normally characterize public office holders?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What kind of example does this set for young people? Mr. Mitchem says he is a patriot.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Under what standards?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Isn\u2019t there a political process in this country to change and reflect the will of the voters?
